We're looking for a family car and this has been an amazing review. Well detailed. My husband has been trying to sell this car to me for a while and I think I love it now. Thank you.
Hi Paul, great review, we actually own a CX-9 which is great for when we need to go somewhere with the whole family, you know with the grandparents and all :). I especially like your pick up on the fact that going from the radio station you're on and back to the lists, it always return and starts from the top of the list instead of the last selected station. That was truly an oversight from the MZD UX team and I can't believe they still haven't sorted it out even in the current model. We have had our car since it first came out, and I had the Apple Car Play retro fitted which costed me around $500. It's definitely worth the money especially considering not many manufacturers out there actually offer this option. On the MZD system, I don't understand why journalists despise it, I've used a lot of system and I can honestly tell you the MZD is one of the best out there for a non-touch screen based. I am no big fan of touch screen infotainment, unless it's from Tesla (which I can excuse because they actually provide so many accessibility and features a touch screen actually makes sense), the rest of the touch screen system are just plain distractive, unintuitive and they leave smudges on the screen. This MZD system, even though the UX is looking a bit old, to operate it using the rotary controls and shortcut buttons is effective, intuitive and clear (also easy to operate while driving). Our other car a BMW in my opinion still has the best iDrive infotainment, followed by Mercedes MBUX and for me, the MZD comes third, followed by the FCA system with rotary controls. Audi has gone backwards, dumping their MMI in place of the VW touchscreen fingerprint magnet system, Lexus still have their horrible unintuitive and bad UX looking system, Toyota with their low res touch screen operation. The only manufacturers which are improving is Kia and Hyundai, as they are also moving into rotary controlled system (just look at their 2020 G90 Genesis) and actually looked like a promising and strong system, however Mazda have a good 5 years head start. My only feedback to you is perhaps next time when you are reviewing a 7-seater SUV, maybe actually review it with at least 5 passenger or a full load (may be challenging in the current Covid-19 situation) but after all this is what this car really is for, to carry many passengers and your review should reflect that. Because if you did, you would have notes that yes the car actually is dynamically great to drive but when you actually have passengers on board, it is seriously lacking in braking performance. Still plenty of power hauling full load, and driving dynamics are still good for a car of this size and purpose, long distance interstate drive is much more comfy in those seats than in my BMW firmer seats, but overall I really wished it comes with a much bigger brake systems.
Thanks for the feedback Edgar, we appreciate it! Have you tried Mazda's new infotainment system in the new Mazda 3? We would also normally test big cars like this with a full load of passengers, but we're sticking to just the two of us at the moment . Thanks again for watching!
Great review except for the centre console complaint, just have the seat higher. It’s an extremely comfy arm rest on long drives, coming from an Azami owner
Greetings from the States. Considering getting a used CX-9 in the trim that you have (Grand Touring here in the States). Great, solid review. Can't find too many reviews that have the second row bench seat and in the same trim. The CX-9 is definitely the smallest of the 7/8 seat SUV's as far as interior space is concerned, but I'm viewing it more as a 5 seater with an emergency 3rd row because let's face it: more times than not you're going to have that third row down than up. What's nice about that third row is that it only seats two so although leg and headroom will be tighter than competitors, you don't have to worry about a middle seat belt jamming into you at the same time. The longer hood gives the CX-9 both a sportier and a more elegant look. I agree that the infotainment system is a bit drab and I really wish it had a panoramic moonroof but they're not enough to be deal breakers. Great job again!
Loving the reviews, length, format etc. Really great. Pointing out the oddities in the car is excellent also. For me, only thing that I’d love to see is a decibel reading! Always hear reviewers talking about cabin quietness and it’s something I really look for when purchasing a car. Would be great (where possible) to have a highway read as that’s where you’re most likely to notice the noise!
In the 3rd row there is a floor vent that is linked to the controls in the 2nd row, you just have to turn on the air to the feet and blows lots of cool air for the passengers. No one seems to know about this. Mazda should be telling all reviewers about this
Awesome review Paul. We are a family of 3 and do quite a lot of long drives so were looking at an SUV with big boot space. Was considering CX-8 but CX-9 seemed to be a better option in terms of driving balance with the turbo engine.. I am waiting for it to be delivered. Having said that, your point of people wanting to have more kids after buying this car is absolutely spot on.. hahaha! .
Always loved your Reviews, Paul. before watching your review for Cx9, I thought to settle down for a people mover but since I watched your review and went out for a test drive .. I think its a much better choice... only let down in CX-9 are the air vents in 3rd Row..!!!! It's Fun car to drive and feel good on the road.. You have been very honest with your reviews... and I like it.. keep up the good work mate..!!
@@CarExpertAus has to remove a couple of side panels and trim pieces on the center console to run the wiring harness but it wasn't too bad. I would say anyone with medium skills and basic tools could do it in 2 or so hours
Yea i’ve actually had apple CarPlay retrofitted to my mazda 3 maxx 2014 and it works perfectly! I paid about $500 for it total and couldn’t be happier. It’s really made the car feel new again even though it’s a 5 year old car. It gets a bit of getting used to because of having to use the knob to navigate it but i got pretty used to it in about 3 days and i’ve gotta say, once you understand how it works and how to navigate the menus with the knob, it feels very intuitive and definitely less of a hassle than having to reach out and touch the screen every time.
Hi there I've just bought one I really like the room and style of the car because my wife is in a wheel chair and I can put all of her things in the back .And your review was really great how the the way you explained it .awsome work
had the android/carplay retrofitted to my '17 m3 gt hatchback by my local Hawaii Mazda dealer in June 2018. 1.5 hrs for labor @ $140/hr plus $199.99 for the parts. About $410 area...no problems...works fine..
@@CarExpertAus yup it works fine, never had any issue with it. Much better than the MZD original software. It involved software and hardware upgrade. New harness/wiring and a new USB hub control panel were installed.
@@jimprovan8866 they have to change the hardware. The USB ports have to be a certain wattage/voltage and the ones in the older Mazdas were extremely weak. They are updating those and the software and you are paying for that and the labor to do it. Is it worth it? That's subjective. Its standard on newer Mazdas and at least an option to add it to older ones.
Oh wow, that centre console - what an irritating design flaw! Still, I like the CX-9 - it's not perfect by any means, but in terms of value and space, it seems to be a pretty solid choice. Hopefully the next update will alleviate some of the imperfections.

Isofix points are really important since more and more carseats, even the boosters for older kids, are being secured with isofix. It's not just for babyseats!
I retrofitted Android auto and Apple carplay to my 2018 Mazda 3 and it works beautifully! Best thing I did even though it cost $500 which was too expensive. But at least it keeps my infotainment somewhat fresh

@InnerGuide agreed but it will get an interior upgrade like the mazda 3, cx30.. I don't understand why mazda did not start with their flagship model...
I got Mazda 2018 Azami Fwd, I love my car, went for long drives interstate. I agree with its drawbacks you have shown. The plastic around gear is sensitive to sctatches, obsolete infotainment system with old maps update, Android update was costing about 500 dollars which I chose nit to do it, delayed engine response when you really want to move quickly but only when using i-stop, you can always turn it off, I am not sure how much fuel it saves though. Does anyone else find it annoying how in the second row, the USB ports are in the armrest, which means they can't be used if the middle seat is occupied?
They should have infotainment systems that you can update connecting to the internet, just like some camera makers are offering. Also, they should use just capital letters for the menus, it looks far cleaner.
Makes it much more practical to have top teather points on all 5 rear seats. I had top tether point put in my 2016 Holden Colorado 7 in the 3rd row by a professional (certified) it was
We are about to have our 3rd child and being able to have baby seats in the seats is very important. We are buying the mazda cx9 because baby seats can be installed on all passenger seats.
FYI, I find a design flaw surrounding the center console area and the gear lever and its actually kinda blocks your way with the AC and other buttons of the console. Very annoying for such premium car segment.
Fantastic review Paul! You cover everything and do it so well. What should I compare the CX-9 to from the other brands that can provide similar value, size, tech, driving capabilities. I'll never really take the SUV off-road, nor plan on having 5 kids!
I purchased a 2020 Mazda CX-9 GT and I love it but its biggest flaw is the locking system, you can’t lock the car if it’s running, you have to turn the car off to lock it which is a pain, in winter we prefer to leave our car started while we run into the store, but that’s not an option now since it means the car has to be unlocked
milaman06 how’s it illegal, Mazda is the only car I know that doesn’t let you do this, every car iv owned you can lock the car started, it doesn’t make sense at all people like to have there car running or warmed up in winter
Missing the info on boot capacity with third row collapsed. Can you actually fit a roadbike in the boot with wheels detached? I easily fit my bike now into a fortuner and a few bags. Often travel with family and my bike so would be good not to use some additional bike holds and such
Can the start-stop feature (at stoplights) be turned off so there is no delay in acceleration? Do you like this better than the Santa Fe (disregarding lack of third row).
Do you get the 250hp figure when loaded with premium 98 fuel, like they mention in the USA? In there they say 228hp is only for cheap petrol like 87 (91 in AUS). Would you know, Paul?
I would prefer to see Mazda offer something larger than CX9 as well, something the size of Mercedes GLS, BMW X7, Range Rover Vogue, or Genisis GV90, and also includes panoramic sunroof, economical diesel engine (like the CX8) and enough leg room in the 3rd row for adults, (or even better make it an 8 seat SUV instead of 7 seat) so we can have a more affordable competitor when it comes to choosing a large passenger vehicle?
Do you feel vibration on gas paddle while driving this car? I have Mazda CX-9 2020 and I feel vibration on gas paddle and floor. Which is more prominent on idle. I took the car to service Center and they said it’s normal and characteristic of this car. I am not happy driving this car.
@@Wfmike actually no. Its slightly larger inside. It also does not leave you stranded, does not cost a fortune to maintain and does not lose its value like a stone in a pond unlike the Q7
I had Apple Car/Android Auto retrofitted to our Mazda 3 2016. I believe it cost around the $500 mark, and to be honest it's been pretty average.. The connection will drop out from time to time, which is incredibly frustrating. Have tried multiple USB cables too. Doesn't like my wife's Pixel phone but for the most part seems to work well with my Galaxy, albeit aside from the occasional drop out mentioned above. It's very common to have audio from the phone (through Android Auto) playing through the drivers speaker, and then the radio playing through all other speakers in the car 😑
We recently got a CX-9. Looked at XC90, Q7 and Kluger Limited. CX-9 has the widest middle row, which was one of our main criteria. Used versions seemed to wear very well interior wise. XC90 didn’t offer anything more, besides being a bit nicer in and out, but older versions seemed to wear poorly. Didn’t like the Q7 or Audi in general and Kluger is looking old.
I know it is a nold review, but when reviewing cars I would like to see if 3 people can comfortably seat in the second row. This is always skipped while crucial for families with 3 growing up kids. I do not care about anything else really if it cannot fit my family.
Hi Paul, possible to do a review on the Volvo XC60? Want to know if there is any con to watch out for when test driving to see if I can live with it. As you know majority of the dealership doesn't offer quite an extensive drive for a car maybe in your family for the next couple of years.
Hey Aaron! We have one booked in June, so keep an eye out for it. In terms of the test drive - make sure you push for a 24 hour test drive. It's the minimum amount of time you want to spend with a car before you pull the trigger. They're now made in China, so I'm keen to see if the quality has dropped at all. It likely hasn't, but it'll be cheaper to manufacture and prices haven't changed.
Great SUV , just wish they had panaromic sunroofs. About those charging points in the armrests, if there are three persons sitting in middle row, then none can use the charging points. Looks great, but not so practical.

@@gauravmangal1850 agree but otherwise it looks to be a brilliant car. will you be regularly using the 3rd row? My current car doesn't have any curtain airbags so it's upgrade for me.
Those extra Lange boots are good in winter if you go snow
Hi team CarExpert, I always like your review on all categories of car. We would love to see if you could come up with CX8 2.2 diesel turbo engine . Thanks
Does anyone else find it annoying how in the second row, the USB ports are in the armrest, which means they can't be used if the middle seat is occupied?
Good point! Do you have one of these, @Roley Sanson? Is there a workaround?
I also wondered the same thing. Mazda probably paid some supervisor over 6 figure salary to make decisions like this.
Pleasant review
Hands-down the best looking midsize.
They should have infotainment systems that you can update connecting to the internet, just like some camera makers are offering. Also, they should use just capital letters for the menus, it looks far cleaner.
what segment is Mazda CX-9? Crossover? Mid-size SUV? or a large SUV?
Makes it much more practical to have top teather points on all 5 rear seats. I had top tether point put in my 2016 Holden Colorado 7 in the 3rd row by a professional (certified) it was
Hey Paul
Can please do review LDV D90 .
I really like your opinion about this vehicle tks
We are about to have our 3rd child and being able to have baby seats in the seats is very important. We are buying the mazda cx9 because baby seats can be installed on all passenger seats.
Good point Sarah! Congrats on the newborn and enjoy the CX-9 :-D
I would really like to see a 2022 or 2023 Mazda CX-8 in GT?
Please do a review for CX8.
It's illegal to keep running unattended and leaving the car running while you're elsewhere. Stupid feature and im glad mazda doesn't allow it.
milaman06 how’s it illegal, Mazda is the only car I know that doesn’t let you do this, every car iv owned you can lock the car started, it doesn’t make sense at all people like to have there car running or warmed up in winter
@@spoon-6914 Look it up, the law states you cannot have the car running unattended.
bcme a fan of your videos mate...subscribed ✌🏻👍🏻
Hey CarExpert. Love your reviews. Can you advise what car plate you have in black for Cx-9? Its Euro premium or normal black premium?
Missing the info on boot capacity with third row collapsed. Can you actually fit a roadbike in the boot with wheels detached? I easily fit my bike now into a fortuner and a few bags. Often travel with family and my bike so would be good not to use some additional bike holds and such
Paul you really don't link that piano black. haha
Great review!
Can the start-stop feature (at stoplights) be turned off so there is no delay in acceleration? Do you like this better than the Santa Fe (disregarding lack of third row).
since when did seth macfarlane starting doing car reviews?!?!
Dude u stole my comment
Ha, my girlfriend just said that minutes ago.
Great review.....
Thanks!
I can only find 4 baby seat. 2 in second row 2 in third row. The middle of second row has no Isofix and hood bar at back.
I would love to see a review with this car versus it Rivals like the Pajero Sport,M-ux,Everest,Fortuner
Those cars are in a completely different class lol
Is the Mazda more quiet than the lc200?
Good Information. Thank you!
Do you get the 250hp figure when loaded with premium 98 fuel, like they mention in the USA? In there they say 228hp is only for cheap petrol like 87 (91 in AUS). Would you know, Paul?
In high octane this car work like 3.5 liter engine
I would prefer to see Mazda offer something larger than CX9 as well, something the size of Mercedes GLS, BMW X7, Range Rover Vogue, or Genisis GV90, and also includes panoramic sunroof, economical diesel engine (like the CX8) and enough leg room in the 3rd row for adults, (or even better make it an 8 seat SUV instead of 7 seat) so we can have a more affordable competitor when it comes to choosing a large passenger vehicle?
Do a toyota crown athlete review if it's available there
There is floor vents for the third row
Do you feel vibration on gas paddle while driving this car? I have Mazda CX-9 2020 and I feel vibration on gas paddle and floor. Which is more prominent on idle. I took the car to service Center and they said it’s normal and characteristic of this car. I am not happy driving this car.
Much better than a Q7 any day of the week.
Nope, it's much crampped inside compare to Q7 despite similar size outside. The infotainment system looks from 2009 compare to Q7
@@Wfmike actually no. Its slightly larger inside. It also does not leave you stranded, does not cost a fortune to maintain and does not lose its value like a stone in a pond unlike the Q7
Kluger is bigger but it out dated. The 2021 kluger is the way to go if anyone is looking for one
It's very common to have audio from the phone (through Android Auto) playing through the drivers speaker, and then the radio playing through all other speakers in the car 😑
you can put 5 baby seats in the prado
Can the second usb port be used as a ipod dock (Playing music thru usb)
Pity we're not getting this in South Africa
Baby seats in thw third row are important!!
Audi is a lot nicer on the inside and bigger
@@dragospahontu the CX-9 is actually the bigger vehicle. Agree the Q7 has a nicer interior but I prefer the XC90 layout a lot more.
@@michaelh5722 maybe the Mazda is bigger because the Audi has the engine mounted longitudinaally
Please do Mazda cx 5 review as well 😀
We will try and get our hands on one!
Australian Seth Mcfarlane
Shut up Meg!
I know it is a nold review, but when reviewing cars I would like to see if 3 people can comfortably seat in the second row. This is always skipped while crucial for families with 3 growing up kids.
I do not care about anything else
really if it cannot fit my family.
When did Alex Oxlade Chamberlain start reviewing cars?
Ha ha, that's a new one, Martin! I'm normally compared to Family Guy creator, Seth MacFarlane 😅
Great SUV , just wish they had panaromic sunroofs.
About those charging points in the armrests, if there are three persons sitting in middle row, then none can use the charging points. Looks great, but not so practical.
Does it have a CD player
Nope
No cassette or 8-track player either, shameful.
